That hasn't worked out so far, apparently. Apparently it's still really easy to post, but looking at how outdated my entire layout is, it sort of hurts.

Just curious if anyone notices this blip of activity! Apparently some widget that I had used in the old layout was changed to do a force redirect to their add page, so I don't know how long it's been that anyone coming to my blog just got to go see ads instead, but... I fixed that. Now the only problem is the rest of the layout is still so bad! Baby steps. Maybe I might even put up a real blog entry at some point!

JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-37241650652739200182012-07-27T09:03:00.001-07:002012-07-27T09:33:01.523-07:00The problem with education

This definitely resonates with me... however, while defining the problem is good, what is the wide-scale solution to this? De-templatizing education creates a lot of potential for inequality (which, granted, is already a problem, and the struggle for equality has been a big factor leading to the current situation) and makes governance difficult. It would take a lot of work and the transition could be a very unstable period. Would it mean breaking apart the current public education system and re-wiring it to at the least cover a few of the major types of learners, potentially leaving the edge cases left behind on the side of the road? Or should charter schools be given more incentive and creative freedom?

It's an obvious problem, but I would like to hear the obvious solution(s), and see how feasible they are. Public schooling has a hard time making this shift due to its scale, and private schooling has issues due to the radical nature and risk involved, and needing to have a way to find acceptance and ultimately show comparison results.JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-26628919063601622702012-06-02T22:24:00.001-07:002012-06-03T00:55:33.099-07:00Our day at the zooWe went to the San Diego Zoo for the Bridgepoint Education Family Picnic. We all went around 9:30 (Sophia, Lara, me, Karen, Leonilda), but Lara got tired early and left around noon. Sophia and I stayed until about 5pm, then took Karen to the airport for her trip to Texas for 5 days. She completely crashed in the car on the way home, while simultaneously telling me she wasn't sleepy. Sophia LOVED her pink cat face painting, and was sad when we washed it off at bath time. She told EVERYONE about it at dinner in Daphne's, Subway, Jamba Juice, and Starbucks, and got a lot of attention.

Overall a good day, and a great reward for her filling up her Heart Board! (probably more on that later). Anyway, typing this on my phone, so forgive terseness and any oddly autocorrected words!
I know that sometime in that time period, I had made posts saying I was hoping to try to get in the habit of posting something more often, which I actually never did. What I don't know is where those posts actually went, because they are no longer here.

I have done a bit of cleanup, and while the layout isn't the most spectacular website you will ever see, it is now easy for me to post to via phone or web site, and it includes my twitter feed directly... not that I use THAT all that often either.

There are easy ways to get to most of my profiles, as well as the ability to subscribe via RSS or email, for the two or three people who care about what I put here. I could potentially even open posting up to my wife and/or kids (who at the moment can't quite spell, but eventually... they will probably laugh at my outdated idea of a 'blog' by the time they are proficient enough to communicate digitally, though).

So much has changed since last posts... our youngest is now our oldest, and is clearly a real person now. Our new youngest is getting there, getting around very well and beginning to communicate.

Kung fu has slowed down but not stopped, and I'm hoping that I can get back into it soon, with kids old enough to share in the pain.

My wife and I are both pursuing new degrees in our vast free time.

Overall, things are good. I'm curious to see if anything gets posted here in the next 5 years, but if not... Hi me from the future!JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-72057771918372598062009-04-21T17:20:00.001-07:002009-04-21T18:58:45.007-07:00Wired puzzle solved - apparently I was fifth...Well, figured out what I needed to do at about 1pm yesterday, but wasn't able to actually DO it until 10:30pm. Once I finished, I did find out I was the 5th person to complete it... but now I have to figure out what to do with my spare time. :p

I would have gotten it much faster, I guess, but not knowing HOW well hidden everything was, I spent a lot of time on super-deeply layered clues that I guess weren't actually clues at all... ah, well.

However, I'm still not sure this was really the final end... I got the solution for the issues meta-puzzle, but there was more than one allusion to the fact that there might be 3 meta-puzzles in the issue, with a meta-meta puzzle on top of those... and I found a number of unsolved hints in the issue (or they SEEM to be.. maybe they are just me seeing things that aren't there)... but I'm still curious if there is more, and still looking. :)

I guess the guy who got first beat me (Steve Bavacqua) by days, though.. of course, I didn't really even get the mag until Apr 18th, and didn't look at it until the 19th, but still...

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/21/arts/television/21wire.html?_r=1

http://stevebev.tumblr.com/JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-36175966154129648152009-04-20T23:39:00.001-07:002009-04-20T23:42:45.420-07:00Wired puzzleAfter hours of thought and examination, I finally got to the 'apparent' end of the Wired meta-puzzle... was an interesting puzzle, I enjoyed it... I still wonder if it really IS the end, as there are still a couple things that seem kind of hanging from my search, and I'm still thinking the solution to this meta-puzzle is only part of the solution to a greater meta-meta puzzle (which was even vaguely mentioned in the issue itself, though whether it was just defining or hinting at its actual existence, I can't really be sure)...

The final result was pretty cleverly hidden, completely in plain site... it actually felt very similiar to the color-coded puzzle near the end (p126), but on a much larger scale...

Now I'm sad it's over and I have to find new mysteries to puzzle out... unless... it's NOT over... *sigh* I wish I knew for sure before I invest billions of neuron-firings into the discovery. :)JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-72593511899457680462009-04-18T23:27:00.000-07:002009-04-19T00:30:15.387-07:00Wired magazine - the Mystery issueThe latest issue of Wired is a Mysteries and Puzzles issue, with guest editor J.J. Abrams. It is filled with a number of obvious puzzles, and articles about various mysteries, puzzles, and other related topics. It was a good read overall, but I'm obsessed with one particular aspect of it.

They stated quite a few times throughout that there were various clues hidden throughout the issue (one time saying there were 15), and that the issue itself was a meta puzzle of some sort. I've found a number of things that I think relate to that, and NOTHING about it on the 'net as a whole yet, and am wondering if I'm scanning WAY too deeply or not.

First and most obvious, there is a Lost-related page in the middle that looks like an ad at first glance, and doesn't SAY it's a puzzle... simply a page with some numbers on it, but a quick glance around shows the upper right corner has an image of a lottery ticket with the 4 8 15 16 23 42 numbers on it. The rest of the page has a series of numbers which might relate to any number of things, on which I have a ton of theories...

Numerous other things I've noticed might be clues, or might be me seeing patterns where there are none...

Also, quite a few odd things as well... for instance, at the bottom of the rants page, it says 'we no longer acccept rants at the phone number (67)24-552-8464, so don't call it."

Um, really? ok, that is an odd thing to say, and I'm almost sure it is some type of clue, or was just a tongue in cheek comment that has become a major red herring for me... :) But I DID call, not being able to resist, and of course, it's left to right not a valid number... 672 doesn't seem to be an area code in the US, it could be a country code and a valid number, but doesn't match any of the other non-us numbers at the front of the magazine, and it's inclusion as a number specifically not to call almost BEGS you to either call it, or otherwise make use of it....

Then there are the bright orange "START" blocks, of which there seem to be 10, with a black bar and an odd orange bit that starts at distance from the start that the last orange part ended, if it's size and/or position are at all relevant, I've not been able to grasp the meaning... and if they aren't, they've consumed a lot of brain power I could have spent elsewhere. :)

The obvious puzzles throughout are relatively easy to figure out, with a bit of thought, but think, if there is a meta-puzzle, or a meta-meta puzzle (which, btw, is listed as jargon in a Jargon sidebar, with a comment about Microsoft and MIT organizing meta-meta puzzle hunts.

The Test boxes with the 6 black boxes that are orange 1 at a time, except in the 2nd case, where 2&3 are both orange... this is the "how we rate" section, and you'll notice that some of the letters are ever so slightly emphasized... These letters, in order, are: "tvBranDshiftspaytwosteps" ... TV Brand shifts pay two steps? Does that make sense on its own, or possibly an anagram of something? OBVIOUSLY, though ,that is relevant in some way...

And the scattered appearance of the JJA puzzle logo, trying to find a pattern in that, too, but so far that is eluding me.... I really wish I knew if any of it was really this deep, or if I'm making it far more complex than intended... somehow, though, I don't think I am.JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-73108533205721210452009-04-12T22:21:00.000-07:002009-04-12T22:24:57.983-07:00Easter pics and others
Uploaded the pics and videos off our camera:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/10181482@N08/sets/72157616595955273JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-78165095599194111922009-03-24T19:09:00.000-07:002009-03-24T19:10:25.736-07:00MilestonesSophia's first cold... there's one first we weren't really looking forward to, but just yesterday started to hit, and today we are starting to get the full taste of it... whee...JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-15524793634116771212009-03-08T21:05:00.000-07:002009-03-08T21:17:59.042-07:00Sophia's LullabyMy father had decided to write Sophia a song around Christmas, and sent us the rough draft... it was just recorded at their house, and didn't have a lot of what would go into the final version, but Karen (and Sophia!) liked it, and she (Karen, not Sophia :) ) stuck it in a format where her family could enjoy it too. She translated it in Portuguese, as well as including the English lyrics, timed to a short slideshow.

Originally we did this in powerpoint 2007, which is the best version, but that only works for people who have MS Office 2007 installed... we then did a version in Powerpoint 97, which more people should be able to view, but couldn't figure out how to have it auto-open as a slideshow. Finally, we did 3 versions of different qualities in a video file (WMV, we were too lazy to take the time to do it in Pinnacle, where we could have used other formats).

So here they are, in the various forms, in order of quality (highest on top):

Sophia's Lullaby (powerpoint 2007 - 11.5MB)
Sophia's Lullaby (Powerpoint 97 - 20.6MB)
Sophia's Lullaby (WMV Full size - 20.9MB)
Sophia's Lullaby (WMV Medium size - 12.3MB)
Sophia's Lullaby (WMV Small size - 2.7MB)

Sophia's Lullaby (MP3, no video - 5.7MB)
Sohpia's Lullaby (lyrics, English 2KB)

Technically, they are all "Sophie's Lullaby", but I kept typing the A (it's not a shortcut in writing, just in speech I just realized. :) )JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-3905244556017013942009-03-08T16:29:00.000-07:002009-03-08T16:30:39.271-07:00New picturesJust FYI to anyone who actually happens to watch this space (that I never remember to update): Just put the latest pics and movies up on flickr, here:

2008-03-08 photo dumpJMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-80691670212282288522008-12-28T13:15:00.001-08:002008-12-28T13:22:14.328-08:00Christmas at homeFirst, plenty of new pictures and videos uploaded to Flickr (http://photos.TrueBits.net) , most in the Christmas 2008 and Sophia 2008 albums (not much time to organize ... also, mostly they overlap, most pics are in both sections).

Christmas has been good, though slightly stressful. We hardly have company at all, and we're hosting both our families plus a new baby for 4+ weeks... the help is probably a great (and bad in some ways, but mostly good) thing, but since we are largely house-bound due to needing to take care of a newborn, the place can start to feel a bit small at times. It's both a blessing and curse that my parents both only speak English and her parents both only speak Portuguese. Unfortunately for her, she's the only one who speaks both, so must get stuck as a translator a lot... I can speak and understand a little, but not enough to be particularly useful. And Sophia only speaks the language of cries and grunts so far, along with Danny and Lacey who just growl and bark, and Nia who just sort of meows and mrows.

But overall things are going better than I thought, and I'm sure we are going to miss this once everyone leaves. My parents leave Jan 2, in just under a week, her father leaves mid-January, but her mother stays until March, so we'll still have some help with the baby for a while, which will be good.

Anyway, Happy Holidays and all that, to anyone who happens to read this around them...JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-48853397092050647442008-11-25T19:27:00.000-08:002008-11-25T19:31:56.301-08:00Sophia - quick pics

Still in the hospital, severely limited by their WIFI capability, our time schedule, and Karen's iPhone capabilities (which has full network access via the air 3G connection, but limited by the iPhones capabilities). I'm just saying...

Just thought I'd add a post, since I haven't done that for a while... and while doing that, I'd recommend watching "Dr. Horrible's Sing-along blog".

Now, as a warning... it's kind of campy superhero stuff... it's amateur (in theory)... and... well... it's a musical. However, you should still watch it, all the way through Act 3, even if 1 doesn't catch you.

At first I almost stopped, but by the end, was pretty impressed.

Oh, did I mention it was by the guy largely behind Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and a couple other cult-favorites, Joss Whedon? At this point, just about anything he creates is going to become a cult favorite, of course, but... there's good reason for that.

If you DO actually read this, I'd be interested in hearing reactions to it... am I just a freak for liking it (quite likely), or is it really as good as I've decided it was?

Also... Doogie Howser has grown up into an evil super-villain.. how can that go wrong?! DH = Doogie Howser = Doctor Horrible ... coincidence? I think not!

And, if you are too lazy to figure out how to see it, here's a quick and easy link.. however, I liked it enough I bought it, with like.. you know... real money.

http://www.hulu.com/watch/28343/dr-horribles-sing-along-blogJMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-10644843540609946352008-05-02T16:46:00.000-07:002008-05-02T23:07:42.044-07:00First UltrasoundWe got our first sonograms from the ultrasound yesterday. Apparently Karen is carrying a little Teddy Graham in her belly! (Teddy Graham commercial for comparison - look at the little cookies, not the giant dancing bears. :p )

Oh, also, it danced and waved at us... REALLY!

Final due date estimate is December 3, 2008.

Video of a little part of the ultrasound ... the first couple seconds, you can hear the heartbeat faintly... over the sound of the camera's zoom mechanics. *sigh* Well, next time I'll be better prepared to catch it.

JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-1428211716513260132008-04-25T12:45:00.000-07:002008-04-25T13:00:16.136-07:00NewsOk, so yeah, as my parents keep noting, I don't maintain this enough to keep them in the loop. I guess there are a few things that need mentioning.

Next weekend is the 2008 White Dragon Tournament, so lots of work going into preparing for that.

We just got a new car, swapped the 2001 Hyundai Elantra for a 2007 Suzuki XL7.

Danny and Nia are still doing good.

We are making some big changes to our house, converting a big open area in the upstairs into a room by adding a wall and closet, redoing our kitchen cabinets and countertop, and moving internal furniture around.

Hmmm, what else.

Oh, right, and one other little thing. I guess it's been a while, but I came home on April 1st, and after a very brief talk about how sweaty I was after my workout, Karen showed me this:

So it was April 1st, right, and she's looking at me waiting for a reaction. Terror gripped me in an instant, trying to figure out if she was serious or it was a joke, and what the 'correct' response was. I think a long pause and a blank stare followed by "really?" is what I went with, which she followed up with "no, actually I just went out and bought a gag test"... again, I couldn't tell if that was sarcastic or true. Women can be cruel. :)

But in the end, it was true. And honestly, it wasn't really unexpected, we were planning on really trying about a month from that point, it was just surprising it was so quick and at that point... we were going to wait since we didn't want a December birthdate, since having a b-day close to the end of the year always seems to downplay it a bit. *shrug*

But looks like that's what we got, and really I'd rather have it come easily than desperately try for years with no luck. I WAS looking forward to a LITTLE more working at it, but ah, well. The one time we laxed a little on being careful was apparently enough. :p Does give us a pretty exact date of conception, though.

Our current official due date is December 4, 2008, but we're having an ultrasound this Thursday, which may change that date a little at that point.JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-20223678334178114052008-04-25T11:12:00.000-07:002008-04-25T13:20:03.602-07:00test pic from phone

This is a picture test from my phoneJMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-86996450417132522502008-04-25T10:46:00.001-07:002008-04-25T10:46:08.623-07:00Testing publishing from phoneThis is just a quick useless post from my cellphone to see if it works. Maybe I should try setting a more achievable goal... like, I must post at least once a month! :) I'll work on that.JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33020429.post-74707041908304795752007-10-25T16:38:00.000-07:002007-10-25T16:52:38.079-07:00Southern California Wildfires

We were actually on a road that everything north of which was evacuated... right near a canyon that was close to burning. Actually, we aren't even to that point yet... let me restart...

There are very few things about THINKING about moving to a new place that aren't difficult, stressful, or frustrating.

We're thinking about moving, though we're very actively thinking about it. We have the house we are thinking about in sight, and have already started the processes of getting pre-approved for the loan, getting our house on the market, and letting the selling agent of the other house know of our interest.

We've already visited the place once, and are going again, this time with a more specific idea of it actually being the place we buy, not just looking at it in comparison to other places. To make things easy, we're listing our current house with the same person who is selling the other house... so he's both our selling agent, our buying agent, and our potential house's previous owners selling agent... obviously that alone presents so many potential conflicts of interest, but I'm watching that carefully...

But SELLING our current place... that seems easy... but the steps to actually let people see it are going to be very tiring... almost as much as moving itself will be (though, probably not quite). The fact that we still live here makes it difficult... we need to make it look 'demo-house lived in', which is VERY VERY different than 'reality lived-in'. And actually living in it while it's in that state will be difficult and a little uncomfortable. Fun stuff...

And we have to figure out where to hide all the junk we aren't supposed to let people know we use... all the stuff on the fridge, on our desks, on the kitchen counters, tables, etc, etc... People don't realize most kitchens actually have things like coffee makers, toaster ovens, toasters, etc? Yeah... well, it's all about psychology. People are too lazy to have to think about what they see when they are looking at something to buy, and we aren't going to be changing that any time soon. :/

Would be so much easier if we could move out before trying to sell it... and trying to figure out what to do with our cat and dog during this process is going to be interesting... the first random viewing person who lets either of them out is probably going to have to file a restraining order against us.

I can't wait...

Oh, and assuming everything goes past this point.. the move itself... *shudder* Then... making the new place livable (unpacking, painting, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc)... I think we should have been storing up energy for the past few years in preperation.

The place isn't even a mile from here... but it is almost twice the size, so that'll be useful.JMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17266594892325393865noreply@blogger.com1
